Well I think I got a bit excited last month with my "how amazing is East Lothian in the sunshine" rant as we've had more wet and windy days than sunny days BUT it was an amazing Easter weekend and today has been quite nice so fingers crossed our Vitamin D levels will get topped up again!

It's time to go back to one of my favourite topics - functional fitness. For me it means finding a job to do rather than doing a workout or going for a run - a job with purpose. It also generally fits in with my philosophy of if I can do it myself then I will.

SO today it involves digging out some tree trunks that have been hanging out in our lovely Cockenzie garden for about a year now since we got rid of the gigantic hedges! I bought an axe last night to aid me as the hand saw just wasn't cutting it and I now have a wheelbarrow full of trunks - yay!

I still have 2 left to go at the front part of the garden and the area behind the shed is a whole other workout.... oh and there is cutting the grass, trimming the hedge, building some raised beds, laying some decking..... eeeek I better get on with it!

As I sit here typing I'm waiting for Pika the puppy to wake up so we can go for a walk in the East Lothian sunshine. It's days like this where I really appreciate getting to work outside and having time off during the day to enjoy it too - the blue sky days easily make up for the wet and windy days!

How are your Vitamin D levels? Do you manage to get outside for at least 30 minutes a day? If not you need to make time for fresh air and sun rays, you will feel a whole lot better for it. Make it a walk at lunchtime if you have a stuffy office to get away from, or add in some functional fitness if you work from home and get out to weed the garden or cut the grass - so many options you just need to do it!

Oh that's Pika awake I'm off to clock up more sunshine hours, did I mention I love the outdoor element of my job and getting to be outside every day? Whoop!

I had a very productive weekend which was a mixture of being a responsible adult and embracing my inner child!

Friday afternoon was devoted to functional fitness, clearing out the greenhouse and weeding for a good 3 hours. Saturday involved visiting the Lego shop in Glasgow (with 3 other "adults"), see the photo for my wonderful mini-figure creations - we had to elbow some small children out of the way and some other big kids to get into the buckets of Lego heads/bodies/legs. Sunday morning was set aside to fix the greenhouse, so all of the glass panes that were missing have been replaced with poly-carbonate ones which hopefully can withstand the crazy winds we get here in Cockenzie at times! Oh and then in the afternoon it was back to Lego, this time with my friends kids but I think the adults had as much fun building things!

So your challenge this week is to make sure you set aside some time to embrace your inner child - in amongst all of the chores that come with being an adult (!) - it could be as simple as skipping down the road (or galloping if you're familiar with MIranda Hart?!), having a go on a kids scooter (I highly recommend this), playing with Lego, having a wee go on the swings/slides at the park etc etc just do something fun and report back or put a photo on my facebook page!

Have a great week,

WOW

By fitasamonkey, Feb 4 2014 03:52PM

It's been a while since I've posted but I'm back on it and will try to add a blog each month as a minimum!

Yesterday I went to the WOW (Woman onto Work) offices and did a wee chat about being self employed.

(Here's the website http://www.womenontowork.org/ if you want to find out more about WOW)

I really enjoyed thinking back to October 2010 when I was just starting out, going through how I planned my route through training, working to get experience and then setting up Fit as a Monkey in September 2011 and building up the business from scratch.

The best question I was asked was "Where do you see Fit as a Monkey going next?" I have been thinking about what else I could do but haven't quite found the right thing to focus my energy on so watch this space and see what happens.

Recently I have started up two new Mummies and Buggies classes, one in Prestonpans and one in Gullane so I now run four post natal classes a week. I set these up due to there being a demand for more classes in East Lothian so now I need to figure out what else the god people of East Lothian would like to do. If you have any suggestions please do get in touch - my email is [email protected], mobile os 07835 857 603 or you can find me on facebook or twitter so plenty of ways to get hold of me.

Thanks for reading :-)

Hello,

SO if you've been receiving my emails or checking out my facebook you'll know all about the Move-Ember challenge. Designed to take less than 15 minutes and get you more active throughout November in preparation for the festive season!

A big well done to everyone who has completed the daily challenge every day so far!

A little pat on the back to those of you who have admitted to only doing it once or twice.... and an understanding (?!) frown for those of you who just haven't had the time!!

For week 2 and lets up the challenge - please note this is still on top of any workouts already in your weekly routine.

Starting tomorrow - Friday 8th and taking you up to Thursday 14th November

EVERY DAY:

- 10 minutes of fast walking (jogging/running if you can, cycling as an option if running is no good for you) - try to pick up the pace from last week

- 1 minute plank - add in 10 extra seconds each day so you should be up to 2 minutes by the end of the week. If you are already a plank expert (not naming names but one of my star pupils did a 4 minute plank this week - yes seriously!) then why not try to increase your side plank - start 30 seconds each side and add 10 seconds each day

- 25 tricep dips (use a wall. bench, step anything you can find!)

Stretch out those muscles to finish

So that's still not even 15 minutes a day, which is definitely achievable!

**small print - you must do this daily don't miss a day and double up or do it all in one go to make up the 7 days!

Stay active and let me know how you get on,

Thanks,

Becca (get in touch - [email protected])
